While most Dentistry is limited to one dimension (the study of the teeth), Neuromuscular Dentistry tries to encompass the various structures that affect proper Occlusion. These structures include:

• The underlying and surrounding muscles (muscles of the head, neck and jaws)
• The teeth
• The Temporomandibular Joints (otherwise known as TMJ)

Many individuals do not realize that muscles play an important role in dentistry. The science of Neuromuscular Dentistry (NMD) evaluates and treats your overall well-being by considering how your muscles, teeth and joints all work together.

Your Bite

To understand Neuromuscular Dentistry, it is important to firstly know a few things about your occlusion or “bite.” Your occlusion is the way that your upper and lower teeth fit together. The muscles of your head and neck posture your jaw and hold the lower teeth close to the upper ones. Your jaw posturing muscles may be overworked in attempting to maintain this position. This condition can lead to a variety of problems including a less than ideal bite, muscle pain or dysfunction, or jaw joint problems.

Through Neuromuscular Dentistry we may determine the jaw position that is best for you and adjust or alter your occlusion (bite) to that position. This field of dentistry allows for the appropriate treatment of symptoms not normally encountered in a typical dental practice.
